IMG-20170105-WA0001As many as 16 records were broken at the 27th Central Region Super Zonal (CRSZ) held at the Cape Coast stadium from 2nd-3rd March, which was sponsored by Cowbell Milk.

There were 8 new records in the boys and girls categories respectively during the two-day event won by St. Augustine’s College and Wesley Girls High School.

New records in boys’ events

Mfantsipim School’s 400m runner Ebenezer Asamoah led the honours, erasing Ahmed Ali’s 26-year old CRSZ record after running a stunning 48.7s to win gold.

Asamoah’s mark bettered the 49.1s that Ali, a St. Augustine’s student, run at the maiden CRSZ competition in 1991.

Significantly, Efutu S.H.S student Sebastian Koufie also broke the old record to take second place in a time of 48.8s, while Adisadel College’s Ibrahim Osman equaled the old record with a time of 49.1s in the same race.

Elsewhere, St. Augustine’s boys’ 4x400m quartet clocked 3m: 20.6s to break the CRSZ 23-year old of 3m: 23.2s set by Mfantsipim School in 1994.

Adisadel College’s Adan Smith wrote his name into the history books after recording 14.7s to erase the 24-year old mark of 14.9s set by Adisadel student K. Obeng Adofo in 1993.

New Record in Girls division

Fettehman Senior High School’s Cynthia Arthur cemented her place in Central Region Super Zonal folklore after winning the girls 800m final in 2m: 20.3s. Her performance eclipsed the 20-year old mark of 2m: 21.7s set by Winneba Secondary School’s Gladys Arthur in 1997.

Sprint sensation Augusta Kwateng, who won the best female athlete award, cupped her spectacular performance at the Zonal competition when she broke Vivian Mills’ 7-year 200m record with a new mark of 25.0s. Mills’ old record had stood at 25.9s.
