We continue our countdown to the Second Liquid Sports Ghana Athlete of the year award by reviewing the nation’s best athletics performances for the year 2016.

11 Ghanaian athletes qualified for the Olympic Games, an increase in the three athletics representatives who last competed in the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Games respectively.

The number was also an improvement over the 10 athletes who represented Ghana at the Athens 2004 Games.

The track and field team in Rio comprised six individual qualifiers: Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100m), Janet Amponsah (200m), John Ampomah (Javelin), Emmanuel Dasor (200m), Alex Amankwah (800m), and Sean Safo-Antwi (100m) and the 15th-placed women’s 4x100m relay team namely Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman, Dorcas Gyimah, Persis William-Mensah and Akua Obeng-Akrofi.
