IMG-20170105-WA0001As part of its 5th year Anniversary celebrations, Liquid Sports Ghana has announced the second edition of the annual Ghana athletics award dubbed, the ‘Liquid Sports Ghana Athlete of the Year Awards’ to honour and give recognition to deserving Ghanaian athletes.

Four categories of awards will be given during the 2016 awards comprising best national male and female athletes of the year, and best locally based female and male athletes of the year.

The award is aimed at throwing the spot light on both male and female national athletes who excel in representing the country both locally and internationally to inspire the younger generation.

Ghana athletics has enjoyed one of its most successful season’s in recent times after 11 national athletes qualified to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games last year.

Triple jumper Nadia Eke won Ghana’s first gold medal at the African Championships since 2012 as the national athletics team won four medals at the 2016 CAA Championships in Durban-South Africa.

The sport witnessed as many as 12 competitions locally last year, coupled with an impressive array of performances both locally and international.

Despite these giant strides, the sport is yet to fully receive the recognition it deserves in the sporting fraternity in Ghana.

The award aims at telling the story of Ghanaian athletes in the past year, noting their achievements, sacrifices and efforts to go beyond their limits using both the print and electronic media.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The nominees for the second edition of the awards include athletes with high score performances, the athletes who won medals at the 2016 CAA Championships and athletes who broke national records.

Below are the major criteria that will be considered when selecting the best athletes in Ghana:

•          IAAF scoring points for 2016’s best performance

•          2016 World Ranking (using Tilastopaja)

•          2016 African Ranking (using Tilastopaja)

•          Medal won in 2016

•          National record broken in 2016

Only athletes who are not subject to doping violations and a clean disciplinary record will be considered for the award.

It is the hope of the organisers of that the award will give the sport the needed scope and visibility to enhance the image of the sport.

Among other things, one of the goals of the award is to help deepen the understanding of the sport among journalists, athletes and the general public.

Here is how the voting process for the 2016 Liquid Sports Ghana Athlete of the Year will be conducted.
