African 100m champion Akani Simbine and former World champion Caster Semenya have been named as part of an 89-member team to compete for South Africa at the CAA Senior Championships in Mauritius from 8-12 June 2022.

Simbine is billed to compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay events while Semenya is scheduled for the 5000m, according to Athletics South Africa (ASA). The three-time 800m world and Olympic champion is banned from competing in the 800m

The team is made up of 42 males and 47 females and it includes defending African champions Antonio Aikana 110mh and Victor Hogan (discus throw). 

Others include Olympic shot put finalist Kyle Blignaut and national 200m record holder Clarence Munyai. 

Conspicuously missing from the team is World 400m record holder Wayde Van Niekerk who has been battling injuries in recent time. 

The African Championships is expected to serve as a precursor to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the World Championships in Oregon 2022, USA.
