Ghana has won two medals at World Athletics events. Interestingly, both were won in the same year and at the IAAF World Championships 2005: a silver medal by long jumper Ignisious Gaisah and a bronze medal by heptathlete Margaret Simpson respectively. We’re yet to medal at the Olympic Games. Many people express surprise or shock when this fact is revealed to them. Added to that, is the fact we are yet to medal at the World Relays which begun in 2014.

All that could change tonight when the quartet of Sean Safo-Antwi, Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Manu and Joseph Paul Amoah take to the tracks in the 4x100m final at Silesia 2021. Ghana run the 6th fastest time in the heats 38.79 to claim a place in the final. But they can run faster. They clocked 38.30s when winning the African Games gold in 2019 and 38.24s at the World Championships in Doha 2019.

Tonights final has a tough field involving defending champions Brazil, Italy, South Africa, Germany, Netherlands and others.

One thing makes this Ghana team special: unity! I missed out on the AG event but caught up with them at Doha 2019. The bond among this group is amazing and it is an important attribute for successful relay teams.

I initially predicted the national record of 38.12(NR) will go down but I have been told the weather in Silesia is just not conducive for records as it’s been raining and cold all day.

I just feel something special will happen tonight. May your sacrifice and effort be rewarded tonight. Make us proud! #Ghana🇬🇭 🇬🇭
