Editor’s note: This is a continuation of our project to find the ‘Greatest Ghanaian Athletes of All Time. This week, we compile the list of Ghana’s medalists at the IAAF organised events, Commonwealth Games, African Championships and the All African Games.

STORY:
When 1976 Olympic 100m and 200m champion Donald Quarrie told me at the London 2012 Olympics that “Ghana should be a force in athletics,” he was making a statement based on his knowledge of Ghana athletics and Ghana’s past achievements.

Quarrie, who was the Usain Bolt of the 70s, raced against some of the best Ghanaian athletes of that era at the Commonwealth Games and at the Olympics.

The country’s first medal at what was then known as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games came at the 1958 edition of the gams through high jumper Robert Kotei who won bronze with a jump of 2.00m. Kotei later becameba soldier and a politician, and was tragically executed in the 1979 June 4th uprising in Ghana.

But Ghana left an indelible mark on the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games stunning host nation Jamaica when Stanley Allottey stormed to a gold medal in the 220yards final in a then championship record 20.65. Allotey later anchored Ghana’s 4x110yard relay to another gold medal.

It seems those performances left a good impression on Quarrie, the Jamaican great, who competed in 5 Olympic Games and won 4 Olympic medals during his career.

Quarrie enjoyed a particularly healthy rivalry and friendship with his Ghanaian competitors especially sprinter George Daniels.

“I remember George Daniels a good friend of mine and he was an outstanding athlete and I keep saying, where are the other Ghanaian athletes? Quarrie queried when reflecting on the fact Ghana had presented only three athletes at the London 2012 Olympics.

Daniels anchored Ghana to silver in the 4x100m relay final at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Scotland in a relay team that also included the great Ghanaian sprinter and long jump legend Michael Ahey.

That competition is also best remembered for the heroics of another sprint legend Alice Annum who won double silver in the 100m and 200m finals.

Four years later, Daniels won silver in the 200m while Ohene Karikari claimed a bronze medal in the 100m final at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand. The duo were part of the 4x100m relay silver medal winning team.

Meanwhile Alice Annum continued her exploits with a bronze medal in the 200m while anchoring the 4x100m to win bronze. Three members of the relay team Hannah Afriyie, Rose Asiedua and Josephine Ocran became very important members of the national team years on.

Ghana missed out on medals for the next 5 editions of the Commonwealth Games. The red gold and green returned to the medal table in 1998 when Andrew Owusu clinched silver in the triple jump.

More to come in subsequent write ups…
